Theme Development in "The Necklace".
Guy de Maupassant's short story "The Necklace" is not simply about an article of jewelry. The title reveals an intricate element to the story's theme - symbolism. Plot and character are also important elements to examine for determining the story's theme. The use of three elements: plot, character, and symbolism helps to communicate the story's central theme - lies only lead to future hardships. The plot of "The Necklace" develops mainly through its main character, Madame Mathilde Loisel. The plot grows from her greed, unhappiness, and deceit. Maupassant describes her as "...one of those pretty and charming girls born as though fate had blundered over her...." Mathilde is conflicted with both herself and society. She feels life cheated her out of what she was born for. "She had no clothes, no jewelry, nothing. And these were the only things she loved; she felt she was made for them." This passage describes her inner conflict. She feels she has nothing (in actuality her and her husband were not desolate poor) for which she was meant for. She longs for a higher station in society. Symbolism in this story, which includes the necklace and Madame Loisel, focuses on unattainable desires and jealousy. Her deceit led her to become exactly what she so much wanted to avoid. Mathilde Loisel engages the most interest as a character in this story. playing her part heroically" and with complaint. He remains a hard worker through out the story. Mathilde feels inferior and jealous towards high society. Madame and Monsieur Loisel are invited to a prestigious ball. ey are also far from being lowly beggars. As mentioned earlier, the title itself names an important symbol.
