Claudius importance to the play is that he kills his brother Old Hamlet by poisoing him. I think that Claudius real role in the play is to have him suffer for killing Old Hamlet.
In the play there are many scenes where Claudius is felling bad about killing Old Hamlet.
Claudius is the brother of Old Hamlet. Hamlet doesn't want to become king. So Claudius pours poison in Old Hamlets ears and then telling everybody that Old Hamlet was killed by a poisonous serpent. Claudius then becomes king. He marries Gertrude. Gertrude is Old Hamlet's wife. I think Claudius relationship with Hamlet is not very good.
Hamlet hears about a ghost that looks like Old Hamlet. Hamlet goes to check it out. The ghost tells Hamlet that Claudius is the one that killed him. So Hamlet starts running around like a mad man. Claudius kinda starts to realize that Hamlet knows the truth.
Claudius starts having Hamlet's friends spy on him. This makes Hamlet even madder at Claudius. First for killing his father and the having people spy on him. Claudius then sends Hamlet To England to have him killed. But Hamlet realizes that somethings not right. Hamlet finds the letters. Then changes them to have his two friends killed.
My overall view on Claudius is the he is a mad man trying to ruin Denmark for some unknown reason. Then unexpected things happen like Hamlet finding out who killed his father. Then Claudius is trying to make things better by having Hamlet killed. But is really making things worse. So is Claudius a good man stuck in a mad mans body?
Well my opinion on that is no. Because if you think about it you really don't know why Claudius killed Old Hamlet other than to become king. I really don't know why Claudius is such a bad person in the play. I mean Shakespeare could have had Hamlet kill is father that would put the play in a different mode. If Claudius wasn't a bad person then the play wouldn't have been so good.
