The visit to the Holocaust Museum is an experience that will stay with me for a lifetime. It is so hard to believe all the suffering and death that the Jewish people had to experience. Visiting the museum made it believable to me. The visit helped me to understand the Holocaust experience and me made feel many emotions.
One of the many things that appalled me was the way the Jewish prisoners were used for experiments. I learned about the salt that was pumped into their bodies to observe how much they could stand before dying. The video talked also about depriving prisoners of oxygen to see how long they could survive. Slow steady torture and death were hard to believe.
One of the things that shocked me was the video describing the gas chambers. It talked of how people were fooled into thinking they were going to get showered. They quickly stripped off all their clothes and stood under shower faucets that s

I remember hearing one story of a Jewish prisoner who was told by the guards to dig a hole in the dirt and jump into it head first. The guards then had him covered with dirt leaving him to die. Their belongings were taken and their heads were shaved. One of the ways the prisoners kept their spirit alive was to sing the song of Yom Kippur. The people chosen to live were treated as prisoners. It was impossible to imagine how they survived. I will never forget the picture of the pile of hair (15,000 pounds) to make slippers and stuff mattresses etc. I remember one woman in the video explaining that she survived the hardship because she refused to give up and that the lesson we should all take with us was to refuse to give up no matter how hard things in life seem to be. A vision I will never forget was the pile of shoes that were left of the people killed including so many infants. His fellow prisoners however came back to uncover him and save his life. I remember hearing stories of how some prisoners would try to encourage others to look and act healthier than they felt because if they appeared weak or sick they would be killed. The video described the crematoriums and the dark cloud of smoke over them.
Something that surprised me was the way many of the Jews were able to survive.
Prisoners would often encourage each other never to give up.
