Cracks in the Dream
Attempting to analyze and explain culture one finds him/herself lost in a sea of lifestyles, opinions, and beliefs. Although we strive for others to find shelter and convert into believing our own culture and way of life, our attempts are confronted and shot down with the freedom of the 'American Culture.' Or is it 'free' at all? And if so what is the physical, mental, or painful price? Culture is not only a belief or lifestyle, it is nature, our environment which we don't stop and take notice of its beauty and its fragile life. Our culture toys with the environment, pokes at our neighbors, and separates and unites us with its language. Anyone can believe freely, but to express that belief and its teachings can lead to questioning, hate, hope, peace, or even love. This is the power of freedom. American culture is described as 'God-given freedom,' (Lindsay) although not all of it is 'free.' There are many times were I have the freedom and ability to drive to the city, hang around my friends, or sleep in till 12. Although if you are a homosexual in say Rancho Cucamonga or any other part of suburbia, that individual would be looked down on in society. I asked them why they believed that way and they simply replied, "Just because I do. I know many individuals that have a grudge against African Americans because of the color of their skin, or their 'big mouths,' or their distinct 'smell,' or some other brainless excuse for their ignorance. Culture is an emotion, lifestyle, and an environment we create for ourselves, children, and everyone around us. Marcel is a homosexual and not often receives poor treatment in Hollywood because of his born lifestyle. These simple actions are activities we take for granted all the time in America. Again adding to the diversity of the 'American Culture' and optimistically creating a more open-minded society. American or not culture is in the trees, the air, our emotions; it stretches from the 17 story building on the corner of Madison and 8th to the 3rd world country that is praying for food.
