Born August 14, 1851 in Griffin, Georgia. Came from a very well known family. Received his Doctor of Dental Surgery on March 1, 1872. He immediately opened up a practice in Atlanta. He soon discovered he had contracted tuberculosis. The prognosis gave him a few months to live, which might be extended if he moved to a dry climate. He headed West to Gleenwood Springs. He knew he didn't have much time to live and did not care if he lived or died. He was often drunk and stood for no challenges from men. The constant coughing made it difficult for him to practice dentistry, and it was soon apparent that he had a natural talent for gambling. A gambler had to be able to protect himself, so Holliday practiced constantly with his gun and knife. He had his first confrontation on January 2, 1875 with a saloonkeeper in Dallas. Neither man was hurt. Days later he had a violent fight with a distinguished citizen. He shot him twice, leaving him dead. The local law followed him close afterwards and he fled. On November 8, 1887, Doc awoke from 57 days of delirium caused by his illness. In early October 1880, Doc had a confrontation with Johnny Tyler while in the Oriental Saloon. Doc beat Ed Bailey during a card game when bailey pulled a gun on him in Ft. Coming west added fifteen years to the life of this legendary man. I loved to read about the fights, robberies, and the fleeing from the law. Griffin, who was chasing Dave Rudabaugh, a train robber from Dodge City. Holliday stepped in and pistol whipped the leader !and then relieved the rest of the cowboys of their guns. Upon learning of this, the Earps began gathering witnesses who would testify to Doc's innocence. Since he really had no friends elsewhere, Doc headed back for Dodge City and Wyatt Earp. Three more men were killed before he reached Denver. He was found guilty of the charge and fined $20 plus $11.
