Legalization of Marijuana

The controversial topic of the legalization of marijuana has been debated in the United States for many years. Opposing sides argue whether or not the drug known as marijuana should be legalized in order to help reduce pain within patients with terminal illnesses or cancer. Individuals believe that the legalization of marijuana will only increase the chances of people using it as a pleasure drug. In articles written by marijuana activists and narcotics enforcers, it is quite clear that this issue has divided sides. The issues surrounding the marijuana debate will only be resolved in time. In an editorial of the Portland Press Newspaper, Michael Chitwood states that the legalization of marijuana, or any other drug, is harmful to children and surrounding environment. He adds that the process of legalizing marijuana is "intentionally vague and requires little in the way of medical oversight or regulation " (7A). Marijuana supporters are using the idea that marijuana aid

Chitwood states that "Correct research has not come close to accepting marijuana as cure or safe procedure for ill patients. It will take numerous studies for the idea of marijuana to be passed as a medical stimulant. If citizens were to be more open-minded, they might find that marijuana could save the lives of loved family and friends. Both writers believe that marijuana is not as safe as over-the-counter drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirins. This on-going study has yet to prove positive results, but the case has not been forgotten. They both agree that not enough research has been done to prove whether or not marijuana can be used as a medicine. Ed Forchion, a marijuana activist, stated in a recent editorial "State and federal laws should be changed to allow use of this drug to ease suffering "(1). " Marijuana provides many risks to its users. On the flip side, many marijuana activists feel that medical marijuana should be legalized. s medical studies especially with cancer. Although there has not been one medical organization that has come to accept marijuana as a safe drug, this does not dismiss the concept that marijuana could be helpful. Activists will continue to fight for the legalization of marijuana, and researchers will continue to find reasons why it should not be used as a medical treatment. Activists such as Forchion feel that medical marijuana is not being treated fairly. However, marijuana is not also directly related to more harmful substances such as cocaine or heroine. They believe that if the government allowed researchers an opportunity to study the effects of marijuana that it may be able to aid the sick, therefore more of the population may be open to the use of marijuana as a medical drug.
