Mambo
-Study of culture and contemporary practice-In this essay I am going to talk about some of the main artists that work at Mambo, I am also going to tell you about the style that they use for their illustrations.Mambo is an Australian surf and street wear company, which comes under the communication, and product area of design. It was founded in 1984 by Dare Jennings, whose dream of an international design and fashion empire was born out of the simple belief that almost any idiot could make a few dollars by sticking a picture on the back of a T-shirt and selling it.Reg Mombassa is one of the more famous artists in the company as he was also in a Australian rock band called "Mental as Anything". Reg is also a painter, writer, and poet, and he uses each of these skills in his cloths designs. Some other main very skilled, talented, and bizarre artists that do art work for the company are David McKay, Matthew Martin, Paul Worstead, Maria, Kozic, Jim Mitchell, Gerry Webb, Steve Bliss, Mark Falls, Robert Moore, Jeff Raglus, Marcelle Luman, and Bruce Goold. All but 3 of these artist were born in Australia which reflects in their work.Gerry Webb is the only one of these artists who is from Adelaide.
He is a painter, printmaker, and Graphic artist. In 1998, Robert played bass for Neil Finn during one of his world tours. The company started with a belief that almost any idiot could make a few dollars by sticking a picture on the back of a T-shirt and selling it. An example of this style is in the picture below which was painted by Picasso. They can contain pictures and wordings which refer to sexual references. The artists work at kitchen tables as far apart as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York, and Atlanta, they share a collective humour which is both ironic and irreverent. Picasso had an inspiration for indigenous art, and he liked to incorporate works that he had seen in indigenous art works into his work. In conclusion I think that all of the artists at Mambo are very talented, they have a bizarre way of humour, which shows in all of their work. Which is true, the clothing that they produce like many surfing brands is expensive, but cheap to make, and Dare Jennings has really taken advantage of this. She is a sculptor, and graphic artist. One of the interesting aspects of Mambo's "Graphis Operandi" is that the artwork used to embellish it's already splendid product is created by a group of exceptionally talented artists, who not only work in total isolation of one another, but are "isolated" from the company as well. They are also blessed with the ability to channel their prodigious talents into a variety of creative avenues. The shapes are very basic, and if you look at Picasso's work you can see some resemblances.
