Athletes as Role Models

The entire United States has become almost fixated on the sports. In the Austin American Statesman of Austin, Texas the sports section is the third section after the main news section and Metro and State (Statesman C1). Athletic games are presented at an early age. Many schools require the students to be involved in these athletic activities. Georgetown High School is one of these schools, its' curriculum requires one and a half years of a type of athletic involvement with their students. The players of these sports become now as the "jocks" throughout school. Many kids envy and admire these performers. When you become a professional, or even just on high school and college, and your talent is shown you become admired by many. "Athletes may not choose to be role models, but their career demands it from them"(Soterakis). This is someone's opinion, but the statement is very true. In many major televised and popular sports the players are known for either playing well, being determined, or having a temper. So, should the sport stars of today be considers role models for young children? Well first of all, many of these stars already are considered to be looked up to, and others have that goal in mind. For the majority

To become a professional at anything you must have dedication and persistence (Soterakis). What makes a good athlete? It takes determination, hard work, discipline, and commitment. "Athletes as Role Models: Why they Fail. With all the great examples of sports heroes: Babe Ruth, Bobby Jones, Jacques Plante, Curt Flood, Billi Jean King, and of course Michael Jordan, you will find those athletes who have to cheat their way into being famous by taking drugs. "Children are continuously seeing sport stars like Michael Irvin or Steve Howe walk away from their crimes unscathed"(Soterakis). For example Lance Armstrong's strength, dedication, and overcoming adversity can all be learned from the youth of today. Thirdly, when a professional athlete is performing, that person is not only looked up to because they are living out many peoples dreams, maybe even their own dreams, but they are looked up to because they have reached what has taken them an extremely long time to achieve. , is the most intriguing person I know.
