In today's society language is an individual's best means of communication. Without language most people would be very hard pressed to understand one another, and it is for this reason that it is important for those individuals living amongst one another to speak the same language and therefore be in a position to understand eachother. At the present time the primary language of the United States is and always has been English. However on December 18, 1996 the School Board of Oakland, California undermined that primary language when they choose take on the subject on of "Ebonics" or Black English. In there opinion those members of their school district from African decent have a more difficult time learning due to a language barrier. The basic idea being attempted by the Ebonics program is to educate those members of the Oakland School district who are of African American decedent in a way which will make it easier for them to comprehend information. However by giving validity to a language that is not recognized anywhere outside of Oakland is putting those children at a disadvantage in the long run. Moreover the Oakland School Board deemed Ebonics as a language. This alone posses two problems. As of now no

If it is possible for two people to understand one another when speaking different linguistic systems, then it is a safe assumption that the two are dialects of one another and not separate languages. A language as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary is A system of words formed from such combinations and patterns, used by the people of a particular country or by a group of people with a shared history or set of traditions. Moreover as a solution they proposed to take the varied form of the English language that is used by their students and bring it into the classroom, thereby lowering their education standards. That is to say that there is some sort of biological reason as to why these children speak this particular dialect of English. The Oakland School Board also opted to use some offense wording. Be it further resolved that the Superintendent in conjunction with her staff shall immediately devise and implement the best possible academic program for imparting instruction to African American students in their primary language for the combined purposes of maintaining the legitimacy and richness of such language whether it is known as "Ebonics," "African Language Systems," "Pan African Communication Behaviors" or other description. Unfortunately the ideas behind their proposition were not the only problem with the resolution. request has been made for federal funding for this program. Seeing as we have now determined Ebonics to be a dialect of Standard English and not its own language, perhaps now it is easier to understand the importance of teaching our nation's youth Standard English as opposed to Ebonics. However the Oakland School Board insists on perpetuating that trend through the use of these programs while I feel that it is more appropriate to instead attempt to put an end to it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. The idea behind this is that children are very impressionable at a young age and when they grow up in a home where Ebonics is the language spoken, they are bound to pick it up. Moreover while the results proved that a "tendency toward language is genetically based, there is absolutely not evidence to show that African genes predispose a person to speak English in a particular way. The resolution clearly stated that the school board felt that African Speech Patterns were genetically based.
