Marijuana

             Over the past decade extensive medical research had been done in an effort to legalize marijuana for medical purposes. There have been a number of attempts in congress for a bill to be passed legalizing this drug. However congress has yet to pass the bills proposed. Will legalization of marijuana help or hurt society? The substantial argument supporting the legalization of marijuana lies behind medical research. However studies show that "marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug for recreational purposes predominantly amongst adolescents ages fifteen to early twenties (Zimmer 46)." The effects of marijuana are far from positive. Legalizing marijuana for medical purposes will only make the drug more easily accessible to those using for recreational reasons.
             The data collected through medical research suggest a "variety of indications, particularly for pain relief, nausea, and appetite stimulation (Ratsch 13)." For patients s with AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy who suffer from severe pain, nausea, and appetite loss, cannabinoid drugs might offer a broad spectrum relief not found in any other single medication. That means smoking pot will help their suffering. However there are negative effects. The possibility of drug abuse due to excess use is extremely high. Marijuana is the third most addictive drug under heroine and cocaine (Zimmer 24). The patient may yearn to heal their suffering all the time; this would lead to an excessive amount of marijuana smoking because the ill would become dependent. The agents in marijuana have been proven to be addicting and developing an addiction could lead to the total disorder of ones life.
