Poe vs Updike

The Brilliant and Unique Writing Styles of Poe and Updike In Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" and Updike's "A & P" the main characters, a crazed man as the narrator Sammy a supermarket clerk use a detailed description to make the reader feel what is taking place. The authors use different narrative styles, such as word or sound repetition to illustrate the events. The way in which Poe uses repetition of sounds and descriptive words such as "louder and other details" makes the reader pat attention to the more important and significant parts of the passage. Updike's "A & P" is written in s uch detail that it includes every aspect of the supermarket so the reader can have a different sense of being in the story. Updike adds key details such as the description of the girls' features or the other one girls' chin or "can", which makes his writing style unique. The writing style of an author is a very personal form of literature that reflects the writers and their characters and in this case the repetition and description of details used! and by these writers makes them prolific and well-known authors. Edgar Allan Poe is a writer for the centuries. He was the first American writer to have his works looked at and fascinated peo

Updike's character in "A & P" Sammy shows that Updike can write as if he was in the situation of being a teenager maturing and making an important and critical decision in his young life. Also Updike's character !Sammy's thought process of what he's grown up to experience and beliefs about the old lady as if she's to get him are also shown with quotes such as "She's one of these cash-register watchers with rouge on her cheekbones and no eyebrows, and I know it made her day to trip me up. The story is shown through the eyes of Sammy. The narrator also uses punctuation such as exclamation marks to show the old man's fear in the moment of the tale. The old man's terror must have been extreme! It grew louder, I say, louder every moment! With the repetition and detail used readers can picture what the narrator is going through and how he feels during this current moment in the story. Updike finds it necessary to have the reader know where he is and what he is viewing in the supermarket. The psychotic ill-mannered narrator in this story states, "Oh, you would have laughed to see how cunningly I thrust in! I moved slowly-very, very slowly, so that I might not disturb the old man's sleep. Together Edgar Allan Poe and John Updike create an atmosphere for their readers to feel and understand what is taking place by their use of language. Updike uses a very specifically detailed way of describing his thought and the events that take place in his stories. He wants the reader to feel as if you're in the same situation as he is with thoughts like "There was this chucky one, with a two-piece on- it was bright green and the seams on the bra were still sharp and her belly was still pretty pale so I guessed she just got it. " Updike uses elaborate detail to put a visual in the reader's mind. Updike uses the perfect language to fit a teen and to get the message across to reader of his growing up in the story. Some of the writings that show his narrative style are, "She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it, where the sun never seems to hit, at the top of the back of her legs"(p 608), this line is sounds as if it came straight out of the average teenage boy's mouth.
