Censorship: Does it or Does it Not Threaten Freedom of the P
Freedom of the press is a right guaranteed by the 1st amendment to the U.S. constitution. This allows anyone to state or print what they believe freely with out the need to worry about possible consequences. The two articles I read were by Carl Jensen; Censorship Threatens Freedom of the Press and William Powers; Censorship Does Not Threaten Freedom of the Press. Jensen's main idea was that we must support a free press. He declared, "It is the media's responsibility...to explore, compile, and present information that people should be aware of in a way that will attract their attention and be relevant to their everyday lives." One of his biggest accomplishments during his career was his creation a national research project called Project Censored. This was established to explore and advertise the extent of news censorship in our society by exposing the media's failure to cover important news issues. Powers talks about the Censorship Fantasy. People feel that there is a separate entire world out there that is not being revealed to them. Having been the former media critic for the New Republic magazine, he discusses in detail about how he found it humorous and he was proud that this magazine had been censored. Both men have
After reading both of these men's article and opinions, I can't agree solely on one or the other. If this can be done, only then, we will have gained the information we need to build a more open-minded and receptive society. I know what's going on in both those fields, but it's not on my top list of events interesting me now. Powers main belief is in Censorship Fantasy. different opinions about censorship in the press and in each of their articles they've shared their views. With this case I'm not too worried about the press's freedom. Censorship Fantasy is the media writing stories that they believe will appeal most to society and sell the best. I do believe the public has the right to know exactly what is going on in the world we're living in, but I don't think it should be a required action. " He believed that it is the press and newspapers obligation to inform the public of all events occurring. The second article I read was by William Powers, entitled, Censorship Does Not Threaten Freedom of the Press. Powers is strongly against Project Censored. In today's corporate merger/takeover climate, our activities are essential to the continued vitality of the 1st Amendment. " So clearly the first thing that made Powers wonder and myself as well, is, how censorship linked with "undercover"? Somewhere along the line, the essence of the meaning of censorship was changed and is no longer being used in the correct format.
