Mina Rees

Mina Spiegel Rees was born on August 2, 1902, in Cleveland, Ohio. At this time, TheodoreRoosevelt had been the president for approximately a year. Shortly after her birth the Reesmoved to New York City, where Mina grew up and attended public school. She spent herteenage years going to the Hunter College High School, where she graduated valedictorian in1919. After high school Mina went on to Hunter College, there she majored in mathematics,graduating summa cum laude in 1923. Mina was very lucky to be able to go to college becauseof the women's suffrage going on at this time. During this period, she was also holding down apart-time job teaching for the mathematics department in the college. Following Rees graduation, she taught at the Hunter College High School, all the whileworking on her master's degree at Columbia University. It was also during this intervalof time that she served as the first woman President of the American Association for theAdvancement of Science. Rees then went on to becomesuperintendent of the graduate division for 1968-1969, and president of the Graduate School andUniversity Center from 1969 until her retirement in early 1972. " In addition, she had been honored with the Kings Medal for Service in thecause of Freedom (Britain) and the President's Certificate of Merit (USA) for her importantcontributions during World War ll.
