Poli sci

The presidential elections this year play a very important role in our lives. Every four years different campaigns encourage people to let their voice be heard by voting. Fortunately, we as citizens of this prosperous first world nation, have rights that aren't implicated in many other nations as they are in our own. One of the fundamental rights we have is the right to vote, being a democratic capitalist society, and we have to take advantage of this opportunity and act upon it to actually make a difference. Still the main question that draws curiosity in my mind is weather the elections by themselves assure that the voice of the masses is actually heard and to how much of an extent do our elected political leaders listen to the public. It can be argued that the best way to solve a problem of this sort is to establish an initiative procedure for the entire nation similar to the one used in the state of California. To introduce the initiative procedure to the federal government, many steps and changes would need to be made, since the federal govern

In conclusion, I think that isn't wise to introduce ideas for people to vote for on the national elections because there is just too many steps, sure it may help with the voice of the people, but how much more than it already does? A large amount of money would need to be spent as well, as one initiative campaign professional put it "When somebody walks in with an initiative proposal, I always ask the million-dollar question, which is, 'Where's your million dollars?'" Now I could not even imagine the costs on a national level, especially because of all the steps that need to be taken such as the drafting stage, qualifying stage, campaigning stage, and Judicial Review. Firstly, it would be very hard to impose the process because there are many steps to take. I think overall, an initiative procedure could be both unconstructive and beneficial at the same time. Not to say that it cant be done, but I think most U. For example at a time of crisis, there would be too much confusion, and the elected peoples official should be qualified and trained enough to hopefully chose the best option to handle such situations. The funny thing is the initiative procedure was introduced to the state in order to rid many problems such as special interest manipulation and enhance the power of the people but it actually ended out being somewhat of a problem. In California, the initiative is now the states main source of policy change but the problem in our state is that it is subject to interest groups and manipulation and many of the voters are confused so there is a low voter output in general. The goal of this particular reform, if it was to be enforced upon the political structure of our nation, would be to limit the power of our respected leaders in Washington and their friends by reducing their influence while at the same time increasing that of the general populace. citizens would not prefer it because it may be too difficult to administer the process since it would be so huge, and that there would be a huge mixture of opinions even after elections and the ballots had been filled out. The minimum amount of votes needed by a sponsor in our state is 150, so it would be a whole lot larger on the nations front. It would be required that the registered voters of our country have a stronger influence, and the level of democracy move up a notch to an extent that if enough of the population were to strongly voice certain views and beliefs that would benefit our country agreed by the judicial system, along with carrying out the proper procedures of the subject at hand, then reforms would take place and views of the masses would be imposed as a law of the nation. ment has many more priorities and obligations than a local or state government does. I believe that if this initiative reform would ever to take place, then and only then, could we truly be referred to as a "direct democracy" on a global front.
