Educational Philosophy

What is philosophy? Philosophy is defined by the Webster's Dictionary (2003 p.484), as the set of values, opinions, and ideas of a group or individual. This definition fits perfectly when talking about education. Everyone has their own opinion or ideas about how education should operate and what should be the focus of it. As someone who has just been introduced to many of the educational philosophies and ideas, it is essential that I focus on what I consider to be of value. My educational philosophy consists of what I believe about education and is my personal collection of principles that is going to guide my professional action. Providing a positive learning environment is going to be very helpful for not only myself, but also the students. * I believe that it is my job to provide direction and communicate high expectations to each one of my students in order to maximize each student's learning experience. I agree with Dunn when she said, "students can learn almost any subject matter when taught with instructional methods that address their learning style strengths". * I believe it is my responsibility to help my students find their strengths and help my students develop pride in them. I will provide a learning environment that will maximize the student's learning ability. Students should develop an understanding of real life and ways to cope with everyday experiences. * When students are organized in their studies, they will learn how to become organized in other areas too. * As a teacher I would like to see my students find it within themselves to challenge their minds and challenge each other. One role is that I, the teacher, should make the learning fun and be able to connect with the students. EducationalLeadership, 48 (2), 15-18. I believe that students need to learn to think and not just remember facts.
