Symbols in Today's Society
There are many different symbols in the society that we live in. Langston Hughes uses some of these symbols in his stories and poems to express his views of the world. In Langston Hughes' "Feet Live Their Own Life", the reader gets a glimpse of how important feet truly are in respect to their owner. These little things are what Langston constantly brings to light. In the story "Temptation", Hughes shows how the majority out-represents the minority in society. The Sunday school cards as described in the story pick at this fact. Usually people do not give these common occurrences in society much thought, but Hughes uses them to make a point. The dream as discussed in Hughes' poems combines all these aspects of life as well as society. The integrity of people we become is a direct result of the society in which we live in. He writes about the 'dream' so much because with it one could do anything. but I never did see anybody like me on a Sunday school card. However, the type of government they came up with did not include the African American community. In the time that he lived, African Americans still were not truly free. He too was trying to depict the world for the cruel place it is. This is why there is a need for change to come about. In Hughes' poem "Children's Rhymes" he says,"What don't bugthem white kidssure bugs me. The world that Hughes lived in is different from the one we live in today; however, there is still the need for change. The day when everyone is treated equally regardless of the color of their skin is when the "dream" will really happen. As babies, most people have heard the creation story. This is why Langston had Simple's character make this comment.
