Odyssey Summary
The Odyssey relates the homecoming journey of King Odysseus of Ithaka who sailed away to partake in the Trojan Wars to restore Helen to her husband, Menelaus. After fighting ten years, the Achaeans win and all the heroes sail for home. When the book opens, a decade later, every hero has returned home or died but Odysseus, and no news of him is know in Ithaka. Once in Ithaka, Athena cautions Oysseus of the rival noblemen and with the help of the goddess, he craftily overturns and punishes them with death. Eventually, he arrives on Skheria and the Phaiakian king there aids him in returning to his homeland. n his palace, competing for the hand of Odysseus' wife, Penelope. In spite of the protest of Telemakhos, Oysseus' son, the noblemen steadily waste and ruin the palace's wealth and integrity entertaining themselves with many banquets, while trying to change Penelope's mind. As soon as he is old enough, Telemakhos goes to the surrounding Achaean kings searching for news of whether his father is still alive. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**none. As the Odyssey closes, a civil war threatens, induced by the offending noblemen's mass death, but it is prevented by the gods. During these ten years Oysseus has been raoming the world trying to get home but he is kept away by many misfortunes, caused by the revenge of Poseidon in behalf of his son whom Odysseus blinded. No one has news, and Telemakhos returns home, anxious that his mother may have remarried in his absence. Yearning for his return, she remains faithful to her husband. Of all his men and ships, only Odysseus remains. Reunited with his wife, son, and father, the king of Ithaka is restored.
