Characteristics of Beowulf and Grendel
What is an Epic? An epic usually centers on a battle between good and evil. Obviously in the epic, Beowulf, the battle between good and evil is between Beowulf and Grendel. Grendel is the bad villain who was born as a monster into exile. He was cursed because he was conceived by a pair of monsters of Cain. All of Cain's decendents were punished by God. Beowulf, however came from a family who were strong soldiers like him. Higlac is Beowulf's feudal lord and uncle. His father was a famous soldier callled Edgetho. Beowulf and Grendel are both determined to be the best and overcome any obstacle that interferes in their way. Beowulf is a very brave person. He was raised to be evil, without giving the chance of being good. Whenever Grendel would hear musicand the sounds of happiness, he would be filled with anger and hatred. Beowulf may have been the hero in the epic, but he was also a bragger. When he fought Grendel he used no weapons; he used his bare hands. Grendel would only attack men during the night. Grendel may have been strong, but he wasnt brave at all, he was a coward. At times he went on and on and wouldn't stop talking about himself. However both characters came from different childhoods, and were both raised different. Another characteristic of Beowulf is confidence. Grendel is a coward, filled with anger and hatred, and unfortunate. Even when he was of age, he was ready to face anyone. He was born into exile when he didn't do any wrong. However , he was very confident, that he would win and defeat anything that was an obstacle to him.
