In today's society there are several meaningful occupations. The single most important job in this nation is an educator. Elementary and high school teachers build the foundation for this country's future, by the way they teach the fundamentals to their students. The area of education that interests me the most is special education. Special education has many different specialties, the one area that interest me the most is the field of learning disabilities. In this branch of special education a teacher must be able to recognize, advise, and help the student compensate with their problem. There is not a single definition used by doctors to describe learning disabilities, but these three objectives are usually found in most definitions. "First, there must be a significant disparity between the abilities that the student does well and those that he/she does poorly. Second, this observed disparity must somehow be caused by a disturbance involving some basic psychological process. Finally, the problem can not be caused directly by such conditions as mental retardation, blindness, or deprivation"(Goodman 31). The most common disabilities include dyslexia, auditory processing, and attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) also know as attention deficit disorder (ADD). Children with learning disabilities that remain undiagnosed and go through life with an undiscovered handicap will result in poor self-esteem, failure to thrive in school, and difficulty in the work place. In other words, children with AD/HD have a dysfunctional hold button, they can not stop their actions in an event long enough to think about what they are doing. Children with learning disabilities! simply process information differently, but they are generally of normal or above average intelligence. Berkley, one of the world's leading researchers on AD/HD, states that the primary problem is really one of inhibiting behavior or controlling the impulses to respond to a certain situation. AD/HD ranks as "the most common neurobehavioral disorder of children affecting five percent"(Dykman 612). Children will learn in their own individual ways. Having a learning disability can affect a child's ability to read, write, speak, do math, and build social relationships. For example, there are many disabilities that have the same characteristics, which makes it hard to categorize them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. Tools are devises and equipment designed to make every day task easier. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder usually is related to problem children. Professional testing may be may be done to determine if there is a learning disability and which one it may be. "In actuality, about twenty-two percent of the schools population are learning disturbed, while about two percent to four percent are learning disabled"(Sabatino 9). ed, beaten, and tortured beyond belief.
