Tell Tale Heart
In Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell Tale Heart" the narrator is disgusted by the look of the old mans "vulture eye." The look of the eye becomes so intense in the mind of the narrator, it drives him to murder the old man. After the narrator kills the old man he cuts him into many pieces and stashes under the floorboards of the house. The ludicrous acts of the narrator, such as killing the old man and cutting him into pieces because of the supposed deranged eye, makes the narrator unreliable in the eye of the reader.
For example when he says "I am nervous: so I am," and "So strange a noise as this excited me to uncontrollable terror," this shows the reader his fear. However his disposition changes with a spontaneous burst of fortitude to kill the old man. When the narrator says "It was open-wide, wide open - and I grew furious as I gazed upon it," shows he is a paranoid and disturbed person. His sudden changes in mood and psychotic ways prove his unreliability and force one to doubt anything he says. The idea of a person taking the life of another because of the way an eye appears is hideous. After the old man was dead and under the floorboards the police arrived, and the narrator remains calm and his "manor had convinced them. "Villains!" "dissemble no more! I admit the deed! -- tear up the planks! -- here, here! -- it is the beating of his hideous heart!" The narrator of "The Tell Tale Heart" is the perfect example of an unreliable narrator. " Concluding the questioning by the police, the narrator had a sudden burst of paranoia and believed not only he could hear the old mans heart beating, but the police could also. Another trait that makes the narrator unreliable is his constant change of feelings such as nervous to calm and calm to nervous. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**.
