             The Ancient Greeks became the first civilized people in a place where frankly early civilization just shouldn't have taken place. The Mycenaeans arrived in modern Greece around 200 B.C. There they found a dry, hot, and harsh mountainous terrain muck like the conditions found today in Arizona. By 700 B.C., despite the harsh environment, they were literate and civilized, years before any other culture. They knew that given their surroundings what they accomplished was a great feat and this made them very proud. This pride shows up in every aspect of Greek life.
             The Greek sense of pride and determination can easily be seen in their forms of government. Athens is the Greek country most famous for it's governmental systems. In 550 B.C. Athens saw a new form of government called tyranny. The Greeks admired and respected the tyrant for modeled the Greek mind. He saw what he wanted and he did what was necessary to make it his. This is what Peisitratus did in 550 B.C. He made Athens the great country it was and the Greeks admired him for that. After his death Athens government changed to a democracy. This form of government is where the Greek pride is most apparent they felt they were smart and clever enough to be able to control them selves. The most famous leader during the democratic period was Pericles. He was a master of working the assembly and the people, which shows the basis for our modern politicians. The assembly was made up of all male citizens. They would meet once a week to listen and vote. The estimated weekly attendance of !
             the assemblies was around 6,000. This system of Greek government is an astonishing achievement made even greater when one realizes that in much more habitable climates many peoples were still living in hunter gather satiations with no form of leadership whatsoever.
