eden's garden
Assignment read all of chp. Three in the Contemporary Management, then read "Management Case in the News" on pp. 70-72, and answer the two questions at the end. Mr. Ron Eden's manager of Electronic Banking system profits from watching his workers every move. Mr. Eden's business belongs to a small but expanding financial service called "Lockbox processing". EBS reflects the explosive growth of jobs in which workers perform low wage and limited task in white-collar community hit hard by Industrial layoff in the 1970's. The room where employees work is silent, talking is forbidden and windows are covered. Coffee mugs, religious pictures are barred from worker's desk. Studies of work
place suggested that surveillance could create a hostile environment in which workers feel pressured, paranoid and prone to stress-related illness. That is to study the way workers perform their task, gather all the informal job knowledge that workers possess, and experiment with ways of improving the way tasks are performed. In addition, specialized, simplified job like Eden's company were often monotonous and repetitive, and many workers became dissatisfied due to treatment by the managers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. Edens used scientific management to obtained increases in performance, which he only benefited from it. Eden's says cameras help prevent people from stealing and not working. All that he expects from worker's is to get the work done and that is it. His company was going smoothly and his business has boomed as a result because of order and control. Briefly, I think he really acted on his own interest, which is bad. For example, using of scientific management obtained increases in performance but rather than sharing performance gains with workers through bonuses, he increased the amount of work system found that as their performance increased, managers required them to do more work for the same pay. The first principle of Frederick Taylor was to discover the most efficient way of performing specific task. This involves careful timing and recording of the actions taken to perform a particular task. Workers also learned that increases in performance often meant fewer jobs and a greater threat of layoffs, because fewer workers were needed. Rather than sharing performance gains with workers, he simply increased the amount of work that each one was expected to do.
