Today in the United States drug use is rising and is becoming an increasing problem. Due to this, many school officials have made their student athletes take mandatory random drug tests. This strategy has been proven to fail in various situations and has also been proven to be very costly with no definite effects. Therefore, no testing of this kind should be permitted in any high school in the United States.
             Many people disagree and believe that the testing of high school athletes results in huge benefits. They believe one of the advantages would include decreasing the amount of drug use among high school students. Another advantage would be officials promoting fair play in athletics. With these and various other arguments, many people have sided with taking mandatory drug tests.
             These people fail to acknowledge the fact that over seventy-nine percent of high school students that use drugs aren't active in athletics (Cato Journal, vol. 16,
             p 14). By this athletic drug testing, the school officials are targeting the wrong students. Testing for drugs sends a mixed message to students. It may send the message to students that to perform better, an athlete should consider using performance-altering drugs. This will also force drug-using student athletes to either no longer participate or to try avoiding detection. There are various ways to test negative to a drug test even if they have taken part in drug use. One of these techniques is performed when the person dilutes his or her urine or even substitutes it with someone else's urine. Another way to test negative is by using masking agents that cover the presence of a drug or its metabolite. Therefore, an official must observe those giving a urine sample.
