In my vain attempt to explain the American dream . I have decided to use The Great Gatsby
and parts of Walt Whitman's Poetry to Elaborate. I hope my pessimistic attitude does not
foreshadow my vein attempt to enlighten.
I feel that the American dream is greed. Why would I say something like this you ask?
Well in my years of struggle to provide and to survive on my meager wages. I have had only on
continuous echo that rings in my ear, "make money". I have always felt that the end to my
problems would be to attain more money.
In the book Great Gatsby, greed was the corner stone of every emotional spiral, jealousy,
envy, murder, and fear. These emotions always gravitated back to greed.
Even today we as Americans are covered in blood money, wars for money, selling kids
for money. In The Great Gatsby, although Gatsby life was luxuriously lived, greed ultimately
caused his death. My assumption is that Gatsby killed Cody for money. After receiving wealth in
an dishonest way, Gatsby continued to pursue other endeavors in crime for money. The illusion
that money can buy a rich man out of any problem causes Gatsby to make unwise decisions when it
comes to woman and mistresses. At the end of the story when Gatsby is found floating in the pool,
his death was ultimitly the result of the green light.
Walt Whitman was very patriotic throughout his career as a poet and journalist, but I believe that he
himself saw that greed was the bases for America's growth. In his poem Thick-Sprinkled Bunting,
Long yet your road, and lined with
For the prize I see at issue, at Last
All it's ships and shores I see, interwoven
Dream'd again the Flags of Kings,
highest borne, to flaunt unrival'd
O Hasten, Flag of man! O with sure
and steady stay, passing highest flags of
Walk supreme to the Heavens, mighty
Flag of stars thick-spri...
