American greed

In my vain attempt to explain the American dream . I have decided to use The Great Gatsbyand parts of Walt Whitman's Poetry to Elaborate. I hope my pessimistic attitude does not foreshadow my vein attempt to enlighten. I feel that the American dream is greed. Why would I say something like this you ask? Well in my years of struggle to provide and to survive on my meager wages. I have had only on continuous echo that rings in my ear, "make money". I have always felt that the end to my problems would be to attain more money. In the book Great Gatsby, greed was the corner stone of every emotional spiral, jealousy, envy, murder, and fear. These emotions always gravitated back to greed. Even today we as Americans are covered in blood money, wars for money, selling kidsfor money. In The Great Gatsby, although Gatsby life was luxuriously lived, greed ultimately caused his death. My assumption is that Gatsby killed Cody for money. After receiving wealth in an dishonest way, Gatsby continued to pursue other endeavors in crime for money. The illusion that money can buy a rich man out of any problem causes Gatsby to make unwise decisions when it

In a way he was trying to avoid what life had planned for his natural journey. Walt says his fellow Americans "are the most materialistic and money-making people ever known" (Civilization and Its Discontents, 551). Gatsby is found floating in the pool filled with his own blood. I have been to conflicts that CNN, has never seen fit to talk about. I am like everyone else, I want money, prosperity, a small island in the caymans. The uneducated think that material wealth brings happiness. Walt's poems emphasizes the need to eliminate any competition that stands in the way of acquiring your own wealth. Long yet your road, Fateful flag! Long yet your road, and lined with bloody death! For the prize I see at issue, at Last is the world! All it's ships and shores I see, interwoven with your threads, greedy banner! Dream'd again the Flags of Kings, highest borne, to flaunt unrival'd O Hasten, Flag of man! O with sure and steady stay, passing highest flags of Kings. Many think that America shares and wants to spread its happiness with its own citizens and the rest of the world. With spreading "freedom" and opportunity America will acquire the world to be at its disposal. From greed stems the very existence of us as American living in this society. Whitman describes the prize as the world. I f were so great and my idea of greed is really manifest destiny. While living on this earth money distorts this reality into believing that you can buy emotions and relationships.
