Change

Within every group, culture, or society a constant change is occurring. Every individual is evolving into something different, and because of this alteration within every individual the entire group undergoes a change. Each part of the overall unit pushes and pulls on the other independent parts; everyone and everything is intertwined. The author William Faulkner through his short story," A Rose For Emily, " addresses this issue. He uses his characters to address the dynamics of change within a certain society and more specifically the Deep South in the early 1900's. The author focuses his attention on three main characters, Miss Emily, the Negro manservant and the town. Faulkner's, " A Rose For Emily," is about the story of a town struggling to move forward. At first glance the reader would see on e main character, Miss Emily's the anchor to the past, and the one who inhibits the town from change. But is she really the one holding them back? Many times she is set in her ways and refuses to budge on certain matters and at these times she is the one holding them back. But there are many other times when she is not the biggest opponent to change. Instead unknowingly it is

"Daily, monthly, yearly we watched the Negro grow grayer and more stooped, going in and out with the market basket. At times Miss Emily would begin to open up to the ideas of change. Miss Emily had begun to date a man named Homer Barron. This was the reply of Miss Emily to the Board of Alderman, the town council. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. the town itself which is restricting it's own growth. This ongoing struggle continued throughout the story and ultimately was never resolved. Perhaps one of you can gain access to the city rcords and satisfy yourselves"(2). The author writes, " Miss Emily alone refused to let them fasten the metal numbers above her door and attach a mailbox to it. On the surface they preach that change is the key, but deep down inside the town's people want to hold onto the traditions, honor, and ways of their past. These two separate occurrences have a deeper meaniung than merely Miss Dmily refusing to abide to new laws. As the story progresses these two opposing forces are in a constant tug-of-war they push and pull on one another. He simply wanted to get away from the chains of the past and move into the newness. A new council had taken control of the town an were collection a standard tax. He uses characterization and symbolism to focus on the idea of change.
