Abortion

Throughout history, many moral and ethical issues have caused much debate. During the past century, abortion has joined this subject as one of the most debatable matters of controversy in the United States. The issue of abortion intertwines discussions about ethics, emotions, and law. One specific aspect of abortion, which causes much debate, is the procedure of partial birth abortion or D&X. This term has conjured much publicity and quandary in recent years, especially by those who are pro-life. Ironically, this abortion procedure that is at the heart of all this controversy is almost never used, may be the safest method of mid semester abortions, and is indirectly pushed by the pro-life movement which makes it difficult for women to receive first trimester abortions. Contrary to what most people believe, the partial birth abortion procedure is usually conducted in late second trimester and not late in the term. Most D&X abortions take place between 16 and 24 weeks which is only half way through the pregnancy. "However, abortion opponents came across the description in 1995, brilliantly and dishonestly named it "partial-birth" abortion, which falsely implied that the method was being used on full

In a D&X procedure, in comparison, the fetus is removed intact through her cervix, with! the fetal skull collapsed to allow minimal dilation. According to the textbook Williams Obstetrics, "These late term abortions are more dangerous for the woman undergoing the procedure. If people don't like second-trimester abortions and want them restricted, then they should stop making it hard to receive a first-trimester abortion. Given that all three late-term abortion methods are horrid to go through and to contemplate, then why has the D&X procedure becomes such a dilemma especially when it may be the safest for the woman involved? "That's why spokespersons say that D&X should be explained and defended, by pointing out to the public that all methods of abortion after 16 to 20 weeks are unpleasant to think about, that particular methods should therefore be chosen by physicians based on that they believe is best for their patients. There is also no national health care system providing abortions and most women who have abortions are poor, minority women, and don't have a regular doctor. Another reason for late-term abortions is sometimes they have no choice. " (Cunningham 397) Also, the procedure is taking place inside a woman's uterus. The procedure is simply an early Caesarean section. -term babies in the process of being born, and brought it to the attention of Congress. The argument should not be whether partial birth abortions should be legal but whether abortions after the first-trimester should performed at all. The risks of uterine perforation and laceration are increased due to the larger fetus and the thinner uterine wall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**Kelly, Matthew.
