Light Curtains
When asssigned to write a formal report I English 305T-Technical Writing during the Fall Semester 1999 I decided to research and write about light curtains. The reason is to explain why to use light curtains instead of the older forms of guarding. This report recommends that light curtains will keep all of the employees that work around them safe. I am basing this audience on other Safety Managers that may have troubles guarding older and some newer machines. I have been a Safety Management student for 3 years and I feel that the classes that I have taken give me a background for the use of light curtains. The main point that I feel needs to be addressed is the safety of the workers in a facility and that light curtains protect without incident. I have received some advice for this report from a professor but the other contents have been received by research. Throughout my work on this report I have done research mainly through the computer via., ProQuest and the internet. I also did some research in the library but was unable to find many selections. The main reason to implement these light curtains is to prevent the accidental cause of injuries and also to keep OSHA from breathing down our backs. Without the use of light curtains there is an increased risk on injury due to forgetfulness or any of the other factors due to human error. Here, the controller uses a technique called floating blanking to ignore one or two blocked beams and signal stops on the third. BENEFITS Using light curtains would affect everyone in the company by keeping all of the workers safe. The costs to install the units would pay for themselves overnight, simply because of the decline of accidents, and the decrease in insurance costs. This helps maintenance locate problems and lets operators check system health before running a machine. ! With light curtains the possibility of having a recordable accident goes down to almost zero. These units would also affect the company's efficiency by allowing the workers free and safe access to the workstation. In yet another application an operator must enter the guarded area to manually feed and remove workpieces. Yet with the rising costs associated with insurance, workers compensation, and fines of up to $10,000 per infraction, some forms of technology are finally being implemented on and around businesses.
