Desiree's Baby
Kate Chopin was a daring author and wrote stories about subjects that were too risque for the people of her lifetime. In this particular story Chopin tells how Desiree's Baby is interracial even though Desiree and Armand are under the impression they are both of Caucasian descent. Throughout the story Chopin's tone remains grave and unpleasant. Chopin foreshadows the upcoming events and problems that will arise between Armand and Desiree. In Kate Chopin's short story "Desiree's Baby", Armand's pride and ignorance completely destroys his relationship between Desiree and their baby. "When she reached L'Abri she shuddered at the first sight of it, as she always did. It was a sad looking place...Big solemn oaks grew close to it and their thick leaved , far-reaching branches shadowed it like a pall." (Chopin, P.185). Chopin is describing Madame Valmonde's visit to Desiree and
She uses this technique to make sure the reader picks up on Armand's change of behavior, because his emotions are soon to transform again. Here Chopin just backs up the statement made by Desiree simply through restating and narrating Desiree's quote shortly after. She tried to rebut by telling him that her hands were whiter than his, but he snapped back that hers were, "As white as La Blanche's. This displays Armand's complete ignorance. Desiree left for the one place where she would be loved unconditionally, and Armand let his pride get in the way of loving his family. Instead of being calm and caring he tells Desiree that she is the one who is African-American, and soon he tells her that she must leave. Armand was so ignorant for shunning his baby when he was in fact the one who produced it. Armand seemed so happy to have a male child that he even was more lenient on the slaves and didn't punish them at all. Sooner than later Armand's true self is put on display, making Desiree feel unloved and foreign.
