Black and White
Black and White. Night and Day. Sight and Sound. Cloud Nine and The Wallpaper Psalm. What do all of these pairings share in common? The fact that they are opposite extremes. This is definitely the case regarding the last coupling. Cloud Nine is a theatrical work with its roots placed in visual soil whereas on the other end of the stick you have The Wallpaper Psalm, which has its roots firmly based in an audio garden bed. Cloud Nine came off as if it were fully intended to be visually consumed. It has an elaborate set which plays a fundamental part of the production. The performance space was arena style with a large stage upon which the actors acted upon. The characters further develop the stage as they interact with it and paint pictures with their dialogue so that you can imagine what should be there, though it isn't. This is accomplished through spoken word. The entire stage is utilized, even in a "depth of shot per
These unexpected and surprising blasts of sound were used to evoke a visceral reaction. Having the benefit of seeing both, you realize what a vast stage and the visual element brings to a play. The absence of props also assisted in focusing the audience's attention unto the characters. " You have backdrops that are layered, with each representing something different and the thespians perform accordingly. Lighting plays an integral role in the execution of the play as well. Another giveaway to The Wallpaper Psalm's visceral intent and audio ingredient was the prelude to the play where the hostess points out emergency exits (in case of a disturbing visceral reaction) and the inclusion of earplugs in the production's program (in case an audience member has very sensitive ears or is seated to close to the band). Along with this, it seemed to provide better reverberations of the loud and sudden musical scores. The addition of the band was an added and unique treat as well. The Wallpaper Psalms had a personal atmosphere that correlated with the production's setting, which was an apartment building. I know I was caught by surprise each time no matter how much I prepped myself following the previous one. Singing was a major component of The Wallpaper Psalm. I'm sure this was the intended effect because the actors each had elaborate make-up on which directly correlated to their character's mood or disposition. I don't believe the scene in The Wallpaper Psalm where the thespians leave the stage and descend onto the ground floor, or the "pit," where the audience is seated, would be possible in the building where Cloud Nine transpired. This is the major difference between Cloud Nine and The Wallpaper Psalm.
