Cesare Beccaria was an Italian legal reformer. He wrote On Crimes and Punishments during the Enlightenment in the 18th century (Kishlansky, Mark; Geary, Patrick; O'Brian, Patricia. Unfinished Legacy: A Brief History of Western Civilization, p.432, and 436). It had a very large impact on European law. It was also the first published reformation on the treatment of crimes committed and how these crimes should be punished. The ideas presented in On Crimes and Punishments slowly made their way through other civilizations and consequently had a substantial impact on the laws of future societies. Another large reason Beccaria wrote On Crimes in Punishments was to reform the judicial process. Although they were his ideas, they were not just automatically accepted into societies in that time. This was one of the main interests Breccia had in his ideas for On Crimes and Punishments. The application of the reformed ideals was a group effort between Beccaria and actual government officials. He suggestedthe reform on the basis of making a happier nation. This idea revolutionized European law and helped found the strongest nation in the world, The United States of America. Beccaria came up with the ideas and a government official in that time period applied them. Beccaria's ideas revolutionized law and how a government should determine criminals and how they should be punished. Once his ideas were put into governments, it started the idea of a fair trial by the court of law. These ideas professed by Beccaria set the tone for the United States government and their laws.
