Some great men strive their entire lives in order to have the privilege of being the president of The United States of America, while other men are unexpectedly thrust into the position, as was the story of our thirty-third president, Harry S. Truman. Truman was the son of a Missouri mule trader and worked until he was thirty-three years old as a dirt farmer. His only ambition was to join the National Guard, but there was an obstacle in his way, he had poor eyesight. This would not stop Truman from achieving what he strived for; he memorized the eye chart so that he could pass his physical exam to join. In World War I, Truman won the respect of his troops as the captain of his artillery unit when he united them during enemy barrage. This was the beginning of Truman's increasing self-esteem and determination to succeed. In 1922, after a failing business endeavor Truman embarked on a brand new profession with the help of The Kansas City party organization of Thomas Pendergast, Truman ran for the position of county judge and won. The Marshall plan was a more extensive version of the Truman Doctrine, which mostly gave aid to other nations such as Greece and Turkey. The democratic committee was looking for a vice president who was not as far to the left of the conservatives and moderates as Vice President Henry A. Wallace and not as far right as Vice president hopeful James Byrn!es. One time he actually said he fond of Joseph Stalin and this drew much heated remarks from the American people. He stepped in and settled a nation wide railroad strike in 1946 that would have been incredibly crippling to our economy. Truman did many remarkable things for the United States that are overlooked by many people today. He stood up for others when they were crudely attacked also. He sent a proclamation to Japan to surrender and retreat and told them about the extreme actions he was willing to take but sadly they did not heed his warning. He could not give prewritten speeches very well so he usually spoke off the cuff but when he did this he tended to blunder and make a political embarrassment of himself and his party. Truman used a very blunt style of speaking which worked both for and against him. Truman to the presidency he did not desire and the ultimate responsibility to lead his country. When a music critic criticized his daughter, Margaret's singing Truman wrote a heated letter telling the man what he thought. A few days later on August 9th, 1945 he ordered another bomb to be dropped on the town of Nagasaki.
