Why does America want to hang on to their youth?

WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES AMERICA DESIRE YOUTH? What is it about those golden years that makes everyone older try and stay that desired age forever? In our society we can find countless examples of the older generations trying desperately to hang on to their youth. It has almost become too extreme the lengths that both women and men are taking to feel and look younger. It has even become a rude question to ask an older person what their age is so that society will not judge them as being "over the hill." In today's day and age we put so much glamour and prestige into being young that it has become completely undesirable to be considered as old, not to mention that you become a member of the out-group. A very good example of these extremes that we can examine is the overwhelming amount of people getting plastic surgery. In the last ten years the number of people getting plastic surgery has grown so much that it is now thought to be the biggest growing trend of the decade (Thrapp 146). In 1997 "plastic surgeons performed an estimated 2.1 million cosmetic procedures, from nose jobs to lipo-suction to collagen injections. That's up 50% since 1992, and the popularity of procedures like breast augmentation and lip

They all contain young, beautiful actors or actresses that are going to be known as America's next heart-throbs to replace the heart throbs of the past. In our schools I think we need to make it a point to stress the importance of not growing up to fast. It is more than obvious that this desire to be young comes from the media. We need to make everyone apart of the inner-group when it comes to age because we should all feel pretty, intelligent and most important wanted. When we look at fashion magazines there is always a new fresh face gracing the cover every month and throughout it are adds all about youth and what a great thing that is. We can even examine music and the growing trend of pop-culture, it seems like every day there is some sor!t of new girl or boy band trying to make it big on the charts and if they do then they become a National icon. I am constantly hearing negative assumptions and cliches that my age group has gathered that are not only unfair but unjust. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. Everything about the media makes it so obvious the age group that everyone in society plays into the most is youth. We are no longer in touch with the real important aspects of life and everything is based on superficial ideals. o-suction has more than tripled" (Hamilton 14). It is more than safe to say that the majority of these statistics are from people that desired to look younger and more perfect. I, however, cannot blame their way of thinking and I know when I become known as an "older women" I am still going to make every effort to fit in with societies perfect image because that is what society has trained us to do since day one. One major assumption is that once you are "over the hill" your life stops; you become to old to date, you're completely out of touch with what is considered "in" and your driving skills become increasingly worse and worse. It is almost sad to think that society has put so much pressure on the "elderly" that they are physically changing there appearance in the hopes that they will feel better about themselves through their acceptance in society.
