World War II was a time of death, destruction and sorrow. The events that took place during this period did, and still do appear quite unbelievable to many people. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki introduced for the first time the power of nuclear weaponry, and the attack on Sydney Harbour by Japanese mini-subs demonstrated the cruel ability of many nations to take innocent lives. World War II was a time for leadership and dominance, the startlingly persuasive Adolf Hitler prime example. Analysing these events carefully is essential if the significance of World War II is to be fully understood.The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 were perhaps the most significant events of World War II. On the morning of August 6, 1945, a B-29 bomber took off on a secret mission from Tinian Island in the South Pacific. Its destination was Hiroshima, Japan, and aboard was a 9400-pound atomic bomb, codenamed "Little Boy" . Just a few months earlier, Harry S. Truman, President of the United States, had made a decision; based largely on his exclusive knowledge that a singular bomb could destroy an entire city, to drop an atomic bomb on Japan following three and a half years of the United States' "direct and c

In Germany today, anti-Semitism is still a powerful movement, as this once peaceful country has never fully recovered from his reign. With Germany already defeated, the military pressure on Japan was mounting. The reality, however, was far different. "Little Boy" and "Fat Man", the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively, killed a massive 220 thousand people, including those affected by radiation. He was the man who effectively began the war, who killed millions of Jewish people, homosexuals, and other 'non-German' people, and who has proven that dishonesty and hatred can be lurking in any society. While the War was initially fought in Europe, many other nations carried out attacks of their own as they were drawn into the war. Adolf Hitler's life, and his key role in World War II have stamped him, perhaps, as what many believe to be the most dominant and influential leader of all time. The leaders of the nations involved were vitally important, Adolf Hitler, perhaps being the most important. Hate for the Jews was a belief Hitler held dear, and he made this exceedingly clear when he commented, "The personification of the devil as the symbol of all evil assumes the living shape of the Jew" . Japan's defeat was vitally important in the United States desire for the war to end, and thus the first ever atomic bombs to be used in combat were constructed. The significance of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings continue to affect the way the leaders of today's nations see peace, war, and more directly, the use of atomic bombs in modern warfare. Perhaps the most important consequence resulting from the attack on Sydney was that it simply stiffened the Allies' desire for a swift end to the war. The attack on Sydney Harbour in 1942 was a considerably smaller event than the atomic bombings of Japan, however the two are closely related in their contribution to World War II.
