American History X
After Derek is raped in jail, his high school teacher comes over to talk to him about his younger brother, Daniel. The teacher, who is black, tells Derek that he sees "him" in Daniel, that Daniel tries to be like his older brother. Derek says that Daniel isn't his responsibility. He's all nervous about what happened to him and what is happening to his brother. He doesn't know what to do. The teacher gives him a hint. He says: "Have you ever asked yourself: "Has anything I've done made my life better?"" This is the key question which restructures the way Derek has always thought. "American History X" is the name of the movie I'm talking about. It was made by the "New Line Cinema" studio, A Time Warner Company, and directed by Tony Kaye. Because of the violence and sex scenes in the movie it was rated "R". The main actors were Edward Norton and Edward Furlong who played Derek and Daniel Vinyards, two American brothers. Derek was a leader of a racial gang organization and was sentenced to three years of jail for killing two black men who tried to mess with his father's car. After working with a black man in pr
However, later in the movie Daniel says that it all began even before their father was dead. Racism is the plot of the movie as I understood it. ison who eventually became his "brother", Derek's attitudes towards minorities were changed. However, not with accordance with their expectations they got killed. His nazi "friends" don't like that and decide to teach him a lesson by raping him. I have a younger brother who is almost the same age as Daniel. While in the jail hospital, Derek's high school teacher comes to see him and talks to him about Daniel. The question to be asked in a situation like this suggested by the teacher: "If you have ever done anything that has made your life better", was a critical one. One of the big moments in the picture was the battle of whites against blacks on the basketball field. At the same time he starts to like this black kid he works with. They may learn a lot of violence from it, but don't get the purpose. Derek is confused because of current events in the jail mixed up with his family problems and he feels himself responsible for all those things. Somewhere in the picture Daniel says that everything begins with the murder of his father, who was a cop and was shot while on duty. Following this reply we see a cut, showing their whole family sitting at a table having lunch.
