Crime and Punishment

In Dostoevskii Crime and Punishment, a murder is the underlying plot. Dostoevskii's writing in the novel however can be linked to other authors work. Not that Dostoevskii stole work from other authors but that he was aware of the writings and used some of the elements of other authors. For example Porfiry Petrovich, the examiner in Crime and Punishment shares some qualities as Inspector Dupin in Edgar Allen Poe's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." Although these characters due share some common traits they go about solving their cases totally different. This is because of the fact that the authors are not the same. Dostoevskii did not in fact steal a character from Poe, used some of the traits as one of Poe's characters. Poe's Inspector Dupin is an intelligent individual, just li

Dupin finds a clump of hair and a straight razor. Dupin puts events that are out of the ordinary together in order to find his suspect. Poe's description of the murder that took place in "The murders in the Rue Morgue" was also bloody. This confession was in progress just as Raskolnikov enter the scene. He feels that anyone who could have committed this crime would not be in that state after the actions that were committed. But then looks at their behavior after the murder. In Crime and Punishment the murder to the moneylender was gruesome and rather bloody. Dostoevskii was aware of the writing of his time and that is why the stories are alike. He notices that these men are playing a game. Based on these two clues alone he uses he knowledge and logical thinking to solve the murder. Both of the investigators in Dostoevskii and Poe's writin!gs were extremely intelligent. He then proceeds to set up a scenario for Raskolnikov to see. Just like Porfiry has in Dostoevskii's novel. This was done on purpose by Porfiry to so he could decide whom to narrow in on as a suspect.
