Heart Disease

Arteriosclerosis narrowing of the coronary arteries causes coronary heart disease. It's likely to produce angina pectoris, heart attack or both. Coronary heart disease caused 466,101 deaths in 1997 and is the single leading cause of death in America today. Over 12,200,000 people alive today have a history of heart attack, angina pectoris or both. This breaks down to 5,900,000 males and 6,200,000 females. This year an estimated 1,100,000 Americans will have a new or recurring coronary attack, and more than 40 percent of the people experiencing these attacks will die from them. About 225,000 people a year die of coronary attack without being hospitalized. These are sudden deaths caused by cardiac arrest, usually resulting from ventricular fibrillation. In the year 2000, coronary heart disease death rates were 236.3 per 100,000 people for the white males and 223.9 for the black males; and 139.3 for the white females and 160.1 for the black females (Risk 1-3).The American Heart Association has identified several risk factors for coronary heart disease. Some of them can be modified, treated or controlled, and some can't. The more risk factors a person has, the greater the chance that he or she will develop h

The feeling of heaviness, tightness, pain, burning, pressure, and squeezing, usually behind the breastbone but also in other places such as the arms, neck or jaw is also a sign of coronary heart disease. The earliest symptoms of coronary heart disease include chest pain and shortness of breath. Coronary can be treated in many different ways. Smokers have two to four times the risk of nonsmokers. Heart disease risk is also higher among Mexican Americans, American Indians, native Hawaiians and some Asian Americans. Other factors that contribute to heart disease risk are stress, sex hormones, and birth control pills, drinking too much alcohol and other diseases (Risk 1-). When high blood pressure exists with obesity, smoking, high cholesterol or diabetes, the risk of heart attack or stroke increases several times. Coronary heart disease is a disease that will remain with you forever once you obtain it. Smokers who have a heart attack are more likely to die and die suddenly (within and hour) than are nonsmokers. It can also make diabetes more likely to develop. Surgery can also be used for the more severe cases. When other risk factors (such as high blood pressure and Tobacco smoke) are present, the risk increases even more. This is partly due to higher rates of obesity and diabetes. Smokers' risk of heart attack is more than twice that of nonsmokers.
