Legalizing marijuana
Throughout this coming year and past years, many state legislatures will consider laws that could result in the legalization on marijuana. Many ideas have been bought up about legal buying and selling of this drug in society. Many people already use this drug legally in the states of Arizona and California for medical purposes. Some of the medical purposes for this drug are arthritis, and glaucoma. These laws should be adopted by the entire country. Between 1850 and 1937, marijuana was quite widely used in American medical practice for a wide range of conditions. The United States Pharmacopoeia admitted marijuana as a recognized medicine in 1850 under the name Extractum Cannabis and listed it until 1942. The reason why marijuana is associated with all these bad images is because it is illegal, if alchohol was illegal as in prohibition it would take on the same effect. I have seen shows and even police officials backing up this argument saying it would let them focus on more dangerous drugs. It is a fact that today, the alcohol industry spends more lobby dollars than anyone other than the Department of Corrections to keep marijuana illegal. Only the non-medicinal, untaxed possession or sale of marijuana was outlawed. People should use that as an example and tell themselves the selling of marijuana will still go on no matter what the consequences. In 1937 the Treasury Department sent to Congress the draft of a bill that became the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. The drug marijuana has been around for hundreds of years first used by the native Americans. Marijuana gets most of this blame because it is referred to as the "gateway drug" wich leads to other addictions to cocaine, crack and other more dangerous drugs. By the 1930s there were said to be 500 tea pads for smoking marijuana in New York City alone. Marijuana is associated with drug-dealers and the breakdown of some societies and neighborhoods. The whole illegal and underground drug business would be shut down and dealers would have nothing to sell. This bill on its face did not actually ban marijuana. Did prohibition work? The answer to that is no. The prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s was the gateway for substantial commercial trade in marijuana for recreational use. Marijuana does not have a huge difference from being drunk either.
