The Blessed Virgin Mary
In the pages that follow, I will make three main points. First, I will discuss Mary as the Mother of God. Then I will present all the other prerogatives that flow from the chief prerogative, her divine motherhood. Finally, I plan to address the liberation of Mary, that is, the evolution of Marian thinking to contemporary forms. The Church teaches that since Mary gave birth of the Son of God, she was truly the Mother of God. This fact was defined as an article of faith by the Third Ecumenical Council, which met in Ephesus in 431 under the presidency of St. Cyril of Alexandria (Pohle 4). Miriam, as she would have been known, lived in the town of Nazareth, a small village just south of the Galilean hills. She is seldom mentioned in the Gospel stories. Many scenes and characters one would assume appear in the Gospel do not. Instead, they have been added by legend, art, and devotion in later centuries. For example, St. Anne is never revealed – the New Testament tells us nothing of Mary’s parentage. It also does not have Jesus appear to his mother after his Resurrection. Most of the scenes that Mary is included in relate to either the birth or the childhood of Jesus.
Throughout her life, she was actually free from every impulse of concupiscence. Their names were generally not handed down and they were usually only mentioned due to their relationship to a male. Many Asian Christian women assert that “virgin” refers to Mary’s autonomy, and not her sexual celibacy. Immaculate Conception describes Mary’s exemption from Original Sin. Mary’s virginity after the birth of Jesus can be deduced since she had resolved to remain a virgin for her entire life. New portraits of Mary will continue to arise as long as men and women seek to know who they are and why they are here. The Liberation of MaryDevotion to Mary has become more and more widespread as time goes on. ConclusionMary is a woman who can touch all people, regardless of their background. Mary remained a virgin throughout childbirth. Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary as an essential past of the Roman Catholic faith in November of 1950. She can claim one and the same son with the Divine Father. Also, Luke refers to Jesus as the “first-born” of Mary, but this does not necessarily mean that more children followed after His birth. “In this matter, we must note that rupture of the hymen in birth does not involve loss of virginity, supposing this to have happened” (Quinlan 162). However, more and more women are regarding Mary and Eve as complementary to one another. She is a fierce Mary, who can empower ordinary people.
