Canadian and American Societies
The "melting pot" is a term used to describe the way that the American system of integrating citizens is today. This is a system used by the United States of America and not used by the Canadian system. The Canadian culture uses a term known as the mosaic system. This is a system where by people who are distinct and have their own cultural beliefs are allowed to keep those beliefs. In America, a Muslim man is known as an American, in Canada, that same person is known as a Muslim. The Canadian system allows those individuals to keep their own distinct beliefs and sometimes even rights granted to them by their own distinct societies. This paper will discuss the differences between the Canadian mosaic system of society and the American melting pot system of assimilation using different examples along the way. Some of the examples will include religion, beliefs, morals, and points of view. Now, throughout the different societies that make up the Canadian and American way of living one will find a similar commonality. For one part of this great nation to want to separate from the whole, shows us that there are downfalls to the mosaic way of life. This is a very broad definition and leaves room for interpretation. Every Canadian shows patriotism in their own individual way, but none the less, it is there. The melting pot is neither bad nor is it good, however it is a way of life for millions of Americans. In the American system there is a sort of assimilation that takes place when someone wishes to become a part of the American way of life. When people immigrate into Canada they are usually welcomed and accepted into our society as sometimes happens in the United States. The melting pot is a term used to describe the assimilation and uniting of immigrants by a nation or a city. Patriotism in America is a very important thing and how can someone be patriotic if they are not completely assimilated within the country. America turns all the different incoming nationalities into one whole American society. Canada is a very proud nation and takes pride in having a distinct and very rich ethnic background. When this family becomes a part of Canadian society, the roles technically change due to Canadian law, however the family roles may still remain due to the ethnic and moral beliefs of that family. This is the least that people in Canada can do to show what being Canadian is all about.
