A Comparison of Real People And Fictional Characters

Although many readers don't realize the connection between real people and fictional characters, often writers use these real people as the epitome of their characters. For example, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, The Great Gatsby with a character based on Arnold Rothstein. Rothstien became known as one of the most notorious gangsters of his time. Not only admired among his peers, Rothstien also captures the admiration of outsiders who had no partaking in this gangster's lifestyle. Fitzgerald invents Meyer Wolfshiem, a friend of Jay Gatsby, to resemble Rothstien. This is proven throughout the story using descriptions of the two men, and references to the lifestyle and similar cr

Due to his connections, Rothstien was going to move up in the standings of the crime movement he "was to mastermind the beginning of the rum-running business and organize the international narcotics traffic after he quit the liquor trade"(a,286). Gatsby explains to a friend "they [just] can't get him, old sport. Gatsby makes a major reference that Wolfshiem is a major gambler when he says, "He's the man who fixed the World's Series back in 1919", which clearly shows a major link between Rothstein and Wolfshiem (Gats, 78). However, having a part of prohibition had a very big risk to it, unless you had the right connections. Rothstien was also known for his ability to get any criminal that had ties with him off a jail sentence. iminal activities of these two pivotal figures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. In closing, Rothstien and Wolfshiem and both shown as being very similar to each with a multitude of physical as well as criminal similarities. Many believe that "of 6,902 Rothstien-era cases, 400 never even came to trial while another 6,074 ended in dismissal", because of Rothstien(a,286). A period when the Jewish Mafia was a very big figure in criminal activity. Fitzgerald describes Wolfshiem as a "small flat nosed Jew"(Gats 74). Rothstein as well as Wolfshiem are both Jewish gangsters. In the 1920's prohibition was in major affect.
