1984-isolation

             Humans are designed to be a certain way. The human body can operate only on certain condition. If it becomes hot or cold, the body can adapt, unless the conditions are too extreme. In this case, the body fails to operate. The human mind is similar. It requires certain elements to survive. It needs to be exercised. If this does not happen, the mind dies, and a mindless automaton is left. A way to deny the mind its needs is isolation. It slowly eats at the mind like starvation does to the body. The book 1984 is a good representation of what happens when isolation happens to a single person, a community, and a country.
             Oceana is a country where a hierarchy rules. This power, known as Big Brother, controls everything, from helping the Inner Party stay on the task of improving and enforcing new laws, to suppressing the poor, but potential mighty proles. To have the biggest effect on the economy, Oceana is isolated from other lands by means of fear, hate and war. This causes a very controlled on economy, and also a very poor one. The Inner party takes the few natural goods like meat and coffee for themselves, leaving cheap, synthetic versions of these things for everyone else. The general population barely gets enough to eat, their rations always getting smaller. This is to minimize enjoyment, a step toward the Party's goal of eliminating all feelings and emotions.
             The people of Oceana lived in one basically three classes: The Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the proles. These three classes were isolated from each other; interaction with someone from a different class was looked down upon, and often suspicious. In each class, there were some groups that were even more isolated from the general populous. These groups included the Thought Police and the Spies, and other various leagues and orders.
