bluest eyes
In The Bluest Eye (New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1970), Toni Morrison tells the story of a young girl who wants the bluest eyes. Toni Morrison, a teacher, editor, and writer has written four books. The Bluest Eye talks about Pecola Breedlove life through domestic violence, family relationships, incest, and loneliness during the four seasons of the year. The novel starts off talking about how the book will end when Pecola is raped by her father. The first chapter tells about Pecola father burning down their house: “Dog Breedlove had burned up his house”(17). Pecola moves to stay with the MacTeers and she menstruates for the first time. Staying with the MacTeers, Pecola talks about having the characteristics of Mary Jane and Shirley Temple.
Morrison reminds: “Cobalt blue. I think everyone should learn to accept who he or she is and not a superstar. Being lonely, Pecola becomes obsessed with blues. The world of advertising billboards and movie stars promote people into changing their characteristics. She being spending her time with her imaginary !friend, “Look, look here comes a friend. She goes to a fortune-teller to ask for blue eyes. To kill time, Pecola talks to three ladies that live upstairs. Being alone cause many people to become mad and result into becoming insane. Pecola then moves back to with her parents to a storefront. The Bluest Eye teaches us an essential lesson: good looks can cause a ruined future. After killing the dog for the fortune-teller, Pecola losses her mind. Having changed the color of the eyes, it created a beauty that is not even human. I didn’t like Frieda falling in love over Shirley Temple, “ I learned much later to worship her”(23). Morrison notes: “Frieda and she had a loving conversation about how cu-ute Shirley Temple was. A streak of it right out of your own blue heaven.
