Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1833. In 1842 his family moved to St. Petersburg and he was privately schooled in Natural Sciences, Languages, and Literature. In 1968 the field of Economics also became eligible for Nobel Prizes. Physiology and Medicine awards are chosen by the Nobel Institute at the Karolinska Institute. When he died in 1896, his will provided that most of his $9 million estate be set up as a fund to establish yearly prizes for merit in several fields that would in some way help benefit mankind. Of the over 600 total recipients, only 30 were women. Each prize recipient is chosen by a committee. The Physics, Chemistry, and Economics medals are chosen by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Nobel built himself a fortune by setting up factories that produced explosives. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901 in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology and Medicine, Peace, and Literature. this it was very dangerous to try to transport nitroglycerin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**.
