HYDROXYCUTc to the Chase with the Fine Print

In the June 2004 edition of Shape Magazine there is a one-page, full-length photo, located toward the back of the magazine, showcasing a woman with a big smile on her face. She is opening her fur coat to display not only a hot pink bikini, but what seems to be her new, chiseled, tan body. As a member of the target audience, women who are willing and able to get in "shape," my initial reaction was to view the article as simply another one of the monthly weight-loss success stories featured in the magazine. However, when looking at the article carefully, I notice the words "special 3-page ad report" in tiny print at the bottom of each page of the spread. On the opposite page, one observes, written in very large print, the trailer, "you can have an itsy-bitsy bikini body," situated just above a picture of a bottle of diet pills with a tape measure tied around its middle. In an eye-catching and clever manner, this advertisement attempts to achieve credibility simply by posing as a standard article that may be featured in a magazine such as Shape. However sly this may seem, it is certainly a very effective means of capturing the attention of the reader. The design and layout of this ad for HYDROXYCUTc aim to persuade the rea

The target group seems to be women who are obsessed with body image and looking great in clothes, and those that have time to work out. The only evidence of ethos is in the fact that HYDROXYCUTc is sold at such "fine retailers" as "GNC, Vitamin World, Vitamin Shoppe, Rite Aid, Walgreens, CVS, Eckard, Bally Total Fitness," and "24-Hour Fitness. Because I have tried this product before, I do know that the facts in the article pertaining to staying on a low-cal diet and exercising frequently do ring true. " This aspect of HYDROXYCUTc appeals mainly to people who may have a problem with compulsive overeating that has cut into the effectiveness of their diet plans. The ad also states that HYDROXYCUTc is ephedra-free, which is definitely a positive aspect for those people who have tried different diet pills. By demanding the reader examine his own body and question its physical attractiveness, HYDROXYCUTc presents anunrelenting argument. However, the lack of medical backing only serves to verify that in society today it is acceptable to prioritize the superficial reasons for losing weight over those concerning health. The third page features before and after pictures of Brandy Flores, the woman in the bikini from the opening page. " While one would think that a doctor or health professional of some sort would promote HYDROXYCUTc as a healthy way to lose weight, there is no such confirmation. Not only is a woman featured as the success story, but throughout the entire article the audience is addressed as "ladies," and the garment of choice seems to be an "itsy-bitsy bikini," perfect for this summer edition of Shape. There is no choice but to surrender to one's own narcissism. To convince the subject, the ad appeals to pathos with a personal success story, ethos when the reader discovers that the new HYDROXYCUTc is sold at many prestigious nutritional centers, and logos by including statistics and numerical research throughout the article. With this honest method of appeal, HYDROXYCUTc may charm an even greater audience than expected. One of these concerns would be that being overweight is a health risk that can affect the caliber of your life, and by losing weight, one can prevent diseases that are weight-related, such as hypertension and arteriosclerosis. These women must also have the financial means to invest in a supplement such as HYDROXYCUTc to improve their looks.
