Islamic, Western European and Chinese civilizations in order to grow and expand followed the teachings and laws of certain enlightened individuals whose minds broke out the traditional molds. These cultures all came into a time of renaissance and change in which the teachings of these leaders were not only accepted but completely changed the course of their civilizations, therefore changing the course of history. The creation of three great civilizations came about because of the quest of three men taking a simple approach to the root questions in life. To fully explain how religion and philosophy molded these civilizations, one must first briefly outline the historical events, which brought the people to the need for a higher being or simple answers to the pressing questions. Islamic civilization and its rise came into existence because of the enlightenment of one man, Muhammad. Islam came into being in 622 A.D. with the hegira (emigration) of Muhammad from Mecca to Yathrib or Medina. Islam managed to push the Arabs into a new kind of community (umma), which at the same time spread far beyond Arabia, Persia, India, North African countries and parts of Europe came under its domination. Democracy became more distant and Monarchy became more popular making the empire extremely more efficient. As you look closely at Western European Culture, there is clear evidence how religion shaped and defined its government, economics and society as a whole. By diverting the focus and energies of the Byzantine Empire, the Arabs prevented it from expanding into Western Europe allowing the Franks and the Lombargs to gain power and by controlling their Mediterranean access to eastern trade and cultural influence was diminished. Religion and the search for the basic answers to life's puzzling questions, "Is there an afterlife?" - "Is there a creator?" - "Is there a purpose in life?" shaped the development of these great civilizations. The polytheistic beliefs of all the people continue to let the cultures mesh. Largest part of population were poor and landless peasants, with taxes being imposed on the ones least able to afford it. He forbade the uses of images in eastern churches and tried to enforce the! ban in the west, even though his efforts insulted the western churches. The aggressiveness of the Arabs forced Western Europeans to rely on their own resources and to develop their own heritage and culture. Christians relied on the teachings of Jesus while the Confucius looked towards those who had wealthy estates. Rome is considered to have fallen to the Huns. Women did not play a role in the development of China.
