Media Marketing Impact

Like most people, I thought commercial advertising did not influence me, but then I got cable. I started to notice that my four year old daughter would shout out "I want that", "Mommy, can I have that", and "Mommy, you have to get me that". She was pleading for the items portrayed in the commercials. This type of response is exactly what companies want, because they spend over $200 billion a year to advertise their products. In fact, if a company wants to advertise during the Super Bowl, they will have to pay as much as two million dollars for a thirty-second slot. No one is resistant to the effects of advertising. Rich people, poor people, old people, and even little kids are rounded up like cattle and are spoon-fed by advertisers wanting us to buy their products. The way in which these companies go about it is rather remarkable. They literally, parade what the viewers want and need in their everyday life. In other words, if a four year old little girl is watching Saturday morning cartoons, I expect she will see commercials selling sugar coated breakfast cereal and the hottest most coolest toys. I also propose that the fifty-year-old viewer who watches Dateline may see commercials for medicines and expensive cars.

They do this by utilizing two things; demographics and psychographis. It seems to work, because consumers are spending millions buying the products. Today however, several manufactures have a line of haircolor just for men. Ford Motor's may use a commercial wherein the driver is hauling lumber and beauty bark to his house to catch the eye of the older man because they no longer live for adventure and have different values and interests. Even though most commercials are less than thirty seconds, an entire conversation can take place in those few seconds. I have noticed that the way they advertise it is to market it towards young men using a commercial wherein hip and savvy girls and boys are dancing around the screen with really nicely colored hair. My results confirmed my intuition that society is influenced by the types of commercials we watch. Psychographics are important to determine in order to change the advertising of the same exact product that will be viewed by different types of audiences. Advertising companies go to great lengths to pinpoint an exact type of consumer. In summary, I was rather shocked with the results I found. I hope it is because society's attitude towards women's bodies has changed for the positive. All these commercials are health related. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**I can not remember because I deleted that page off my hard drive. By determining these, they are able to effectively market their products. I also noticed commercials for breakfast cereals aimed at all three groups, however, the sugar coated ones were aired during the cartoons.
