Nicotine
"RRRRRRRRRRinnnnnnnnnggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!", the MHS school bell was letting everyone know that 2nd period was over. As I make my way to my locker I see dozens of kids going out to have a smoke at Fireman's Park. "I've always wondered how many kids in this school smoke.." I said to one of my friends. I never knew much about nicotine. I had always wondered about it. My grandpa has been very ill since 1998 has come around, this is because he has smoked for about 40 years. Recently, he was just released from the hospital where he was for almost a month. He had fluid in his lungs and the cigarette smoking was literally eating him from the inside out. I wanted to know more about how I could help and what I could do to learn more about what nicotine actually is. I also wanted to know how nicotine works, and why it is such an addictive I was really confused on the topic, I had never learned about any of it, nor taken any health classes that dealt with the topic. What are the effects? What types of cancer can you get from it? How many people smoke? How many people have died from smoking? Millions of questions ran
If nicotine wasn't addictive, no one would be attracted to it. Most of the students who tried it , but do not currently smoke, say they don't because of sports. I think it's really dumb that kids smoke because they think it's cool. Nicotine basically acts by substituting for the body's own chemical at nicotine receptors. For my survey, I passed out 75 questionnaires to students from grades 9 through 12 at Middleton High School. FINDINGS Nicotine is the drug in tobacco that causes addiction. It depends on the drug whether it is prescription or over the counter. Tolerance is the process by which someone becomes used to nicotine so that the nicotine no longer has an effect at it's original dose. All of the 75 surveyed claim they are aware of the long and short term side effects of smoking. I decided to target teens in my school, and find out what percentage had tried smoking, and do smoke, their reasons, etc. I was going to talk to my grandpa and see what he had to say, but he wasn't able to because he was ill with lung problems due to smoking. If they were aware of the short and long term health problems that come with smoking, they would choose not to smoke. Some of the places are: American Heart Association, American Lung Association, your local Red Cross, a counselor, parents/family, friends, and your local programs.
