Alfred Adler

             Adolescence is a time of change and realization of one's life and its goals. Humans in themselves are highly influenced by their social contexts. We are predisposed in early childhood by significant others in how we start to develop our personality and how we will interact with the world around us. As human beings we have the ability to make choices for ourselves and set goals for the future. According to Adler this striving towards a specific goal is the purpose of our behavior, how we interpret events and how we will interact with others (Corey, 2002, p110). In the time of adolescence as we start to make choices for ourselves and set goals for the future, the decisions we make concerning our goals will impact us the rest of our lives. This paper explores the perspectives and concepts of Adlerian therapy in counseling adolescents.
             I feel that humans are born with certain instincts that make us want to be creatures of society. More importantly, it is how we learn to interact with others and what motivates us in doing so that is crucial. From early in childhood we rely on others, specifically parents, to help meet our basic needs. Of course we are self-motivated to meet our basic needs such as food, water, shelter, but other basic needs such as feeling secure, accepted, and worthwhile are sought after from a place in family and in society. What exactly motivates us to be the humans that we strive to be in a societal framework? I support Adler's concept of social interest and community feeling. These terms refer to the individual's awareness of being part of the human community and to individual's attitudes in dealing with the social world (Corey, 2002 p.111).
