Macbeth as a Tragic Hero

There are a couple of personality traits that make up a tragic hero. The most important of these is a tragic flaw. The hero also has to be an upstanding person who fails in his endeavors. Readers will also sympathize with the character and feel bad for his situation. William Shakespeare creates a tragic hero in almost all of his works. In Macbeth, Shakespeare successfully creates a tragic hero.
Readers can easily sympathize with Macbeth. In Bloom’s article he says that, “…we are unable to resist identifying ourselves with Macbeth (517). Macbeth’s dilemmas in the play are not that uncommon to us in real life. Rarely does these events have the same consequences as they did to Macbeth we can still recognize them. People have friends that they really can’t stand up to like Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. You can also look at that as peer pressure. It is very easy for readers to understand what Macbeth is going through and it can be easy to become attached to him.
Macbeth was a highly regarded noble of his time. “…Brave Macbeth-well he deserves that name-/Disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel,” the Sergeant says of Macbeth (I, II 150). This shows how that the leaders of the army thought that Macbeth was very brave. They trusted him to lead them into any war. The sergeant said Macbeth “carved out his passage till he faced the slave” (I, II 150). This shows how determined Macbeth is. He fought and fought until he faced the enemy general himself. Macbeth has true valor and courage. This courage and determination shows how great a character Macbeth is.
Macbeth’s tragic flaw is his ambition. In the end his ambition gets him killed. His ambition if left alone would not be unhealthy for him. His ambition was fueled from two sources. The witches made him want to be king of Scotland and Lady Macbeth pushed him to commit murder. Without them he would not have harmed anyone.
