Beowulf - the Hero

Epic heroes usually exemplify character traits most admired by their societies. The Anglo-Saxons first told Beowulf around the year 600 AD. When it was formally recorded around the year 1000, their societal structure had changed some, but their idea of a great leader was still the same. Beowulf is not a factual person, but the ideal king and warrior of the time.
Beowulf was obviously a man of outstanding courage. When he first heard about the terrorizing ways of the monster Grendel, Beowulf did not falter. He immediately asked his king for permission, rallied the troops, and set sail for Denmark (lines 195-215). The following excerpt showcases Beo's valor in preparation for his battle against Grendel:

Beo acknowledges that he is old and will probably die in his struggle, "I am old, now, but will fight" (line 2512). He then went into battle against the fire-breathing dragon alone. The Geats measured a warrior by his bravery in battle. The Anglo-Saxons were aware of the shortness of life – fame was their only way to achieve immortality.
Loyalty to your leader and tribe were essential in the Anglo-Saxon time period. When Beowulf was still young, but after he defeated Grendel, Beo defended his country against the invading Franks. During the struggle, the enemy warrior Dagref murdered his king and robbed his corpse.
(the treasures) never came to Dagref's king...
He was brave and strong, but I swept him in my arms,
